IMG_0638Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) placement at all City of Fort WorthSports Complexes

Early CPR and early defibrillation are the 2 most significant indicators for survival for an out of hospital cardiac arrest.  There are 10 city owned sports complexes within the City of Fort Worth.  Only one of these sites currently had an AED, which is was not routinely available to the general public.

One of the biggest challenges in facilitating a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) program at these complexes is that most of them do not have buildings located on the property in order to house a PAD.  Many just have rows of port-a-potties and maybe a shed.   After much discussion and planning, a process has been developed to enable the routine availability of PADs at each of the sports complexes.  Funding has been received from several community partners for the purchase of these AEDs (Baylor All Saints Hospital, Cook Children’s Hospital, The Ben Hogan Sports Center at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, and Lockheed Martin).  CPR and AED Training for the Fort Worth Parks and Community Service staff was provided January 2014 by the Fort Worth Fire Department and MedStar.  The 10 PADs were presented at the Fort Worth Parks and Community Service Board meeting on March 26, 2014.  Thanks to All of our partners for making this happen!!!!!

Volunteer Youth Coach Training: Head, Heat, and Heart

Recent Texas law changes regarding training requirements for sports coaches and athletic trainers now require CPR, Head Injury, and Heat Emergency education. This training only applies to college, high school, and junior high school coaches. In the City of Fort Worth we have over a large number of volunteer youth sports coaches who do not have or receive this type training, but who are responsible for thousand of our youth athletes.

Online App for Coaches:

An easy to access and use online app has been developed for coaches that covers the following topics:

      • ER locations
      • Compression-only CPR
      • Concussion management
      • Injury care/first aid
      • Sports nutrition
      • Emergency action plans
      • Link to the Head Heat Heart training on You Tube

A pre and post test will be given for knowledge acquisition. We will also track the percentage of youth sports coaches receiving this training as well as accessing the online training.
